Wrote... I don't see any insight, though. It is all "wow this place is like sooooo different". Light is one thing, but noticing that the Japanese have nicknamed simple bikes "grandmother bicycles" is wrong. They are MAMA-chari, which is mother, not grandmother. Granted, maybe on her little island they are BABA-cheri, but seems to think what she experiences in Japan is all there is in Japan. Her account of the graduation ceremony was cute and funny for "us" but would she say the same thing to her students parents? The way she writes seems to suggest a white belt (her choice of words, not mine) than the black or brown she probably thinks she deserves.
